I am sorry to hear this news. Richie was a classmate all the way back to elementary school. His family lived at the edge of Fellers Pond (where small carp, goldfish and catfish were preyed upon by kids dirty from digging worms), he had a reel-to-reel tape recorder in the 1950’s and I thought he was the luckiest kid in the world! He was also a really nice kid – his dad was on the school board so he really had no choice. Sorry to lose a boyhood friend but the memories live on.

From Manny Freedman on July 8th, 2010
I'd always appreciated Dick's "dry" sense of humor throughout high school and, after reuniting with him recently on the web and in person, as a "serious" adult.

Dick had the ability to tell a story,  whether real or not, in a manner that picturesquely would  draw me in and involve me. As a writer for a newspaper, this talent was obviously a meal ticket.

I am so glad that Dick had taken the time in the recent past to visit our mutual friend, Darron Castiglione, in Beech Mountain, NC.  I met with them and Ron Fasso, with whom Dick was traveling.  I had no idea at the time that that was both our reunion and last meeting.

One of the last memories I'll have of him was a brief discussion as to whether he should make the switch from "Dick" to "Rich."  Well, whichever, I'll surely miss him.

From Darron Castiglione on July 9th, 2010
Dick, I remember him when we called him Richie, was a wonderful friend; he could make me laugh til I cried.  His sense of humor and wit are things that  I will always fondly recall.  I was most fortunate to have had him and Ron Faso as house guests and we just had a wondeful time.  Manny Freedman was here also and it was just a great time.  Dick will be sorely missed by so many; I hope to meet with him again, sometime, someplace and I just know he'll make be laugh.

Rest in Peace Dear Friend,
Darron

From Darron Castiglione on July 13th, 2010
I remember Dick when we called him Richie back in High School; he was a great friend then and after reconnecting after many, many years he still was the great friend I knew back when.  He could make me laugh till I cried; he recent visit here with Ron Faso and Manny Freedman were one of the great times I have enjoyed with friends.  He is sorely missed; I still can't believe that he is gone.  Rest in Peace Old Friend, hope to see you again some time, some place cause I know you'll make me laugh and be happy.

From Carol Sue Egan on September 14th, 2011
Richard was my first friend ever, when we started kindergarten  at School Street School and he was a dear friend all through school. We had plans to meet, which will have to wait now until some day we are all together. He was a great person and a listener. I was glad to reconnect with him not too long ago on Face Book. Our FB relationship was short, but our friendship lasted many years and I am so very glad of that. Rest in Peace, dear friend.

Rod and myself shared many times; good, bad and just freakin' hilarious. We had common beliefs, principles, likes and dislikes. We met in 1955 as 8yr olds growing up in Lindenhurst, N.Y. I was part of his wedding party and he was my best man.
In the end, Rod was cheated.....after serving both family and country devoted and proud he was stricken with an aggressive cancer that eventually took him. He was a loving father - strict and tough but nonetheless loving of his wife Doris and his children Erik, Colleen, and Ryan. He was cheated out of seeing his children become successful in their chosen careers. He was cheated out of knowing his grandchildren Abigail, Hannah, Benjamin, Paul, Maeve, Matthew, and Kori. He was cheated out of a well desrved pension, retirement, Social Security and Medicare. He was even cheated out of the customary 21-gun salute because the Army couldn't muster seven riflemen and a trumpeter. I am very sad.

                                     I REMEMBER
Wayne was an independent  force of nature .
We used to gather behind the LHS building  on summer nights to decide what to do that eve . it was early sept and we were getting ready to head back to school. i rememember the night i drove up and  got the news that Wayne was gone at age 21 . i used to scrimmage with Wayne in wrestling practice . he was so good he used to casually  hum the song "forget him" in tune, without missing a note  ( sung by  BOBBY VEE?)  as he thorougjly kicked my ass. for whatever reason he liked me and over the years my like for him became love.
on sept 16 1988  ...., more than 21 years after we lost  him i visited the Viet Nam memorial in dc  with my older son who was 6 at that  time. Wayne was there on Panel: 25 E.........Line 086...

TIM SHELTON  ....   BOB DORNER .... ............ JOE DI LANDRO.....( I wore his number 41 jersey  in football in tribute  to him and as joe was i was voted the most valuable player awrd and  elected co captain with  my best friend Bill Pugh)........ ALF ERIKSEN........TOM  POLDINO..........and  ROBERT  JAMIESON  were all there  on  panels too

i  think of all of them very  often  especially on memorial day , the 4th , memorial day etc . david halberstam wrote a book about the nature of those who served in Vietnam called " the best and the brightest"
PLEASE READ IT

i will never accept or understand to  this very moment what they were sacrificed for and i still don't know ,,, but the bitterness is long gone and my love and appreciation  for Wayne and all the rest of them only grows.

THE BEST AND THE BRIGHTEST

Terry and I were great friends in high school and kept in touch off and on over the years.  He moved to Phoenix, Arizona after graduation and became a Police Officer, Army Warrant Officer, and CIA Intelligence Officer, in that order, retiring in 1998 in Arizona.  I last saw him in 1985 in Washington, DC.  I miss a great deal and only wish we could have stay connected his last 14 years.

Sharon signed my yearbook with the words, "Remember me" and "Love Always, Sha(the Nuttttt". I'm sure she brought happiness into the lives of the many people she met in her life. She was a beautiful, joyful person and I'm sorry she's gone so soon.

Reviewing this memorial page and coming across Maryann name made me reflect on my time with her.  Througout the years I always wonderd how her life was, was she happy, did she live a fullfilled life.   I guess i'll never know .  I didn't know she passed till I seen it on this web site.  I hope she had a great life...

Judie was one of my best friends growing up, as well as an adult.  She was a very loving and giving person with a great sense of humor and a terrific gift of gab.  I will always miss her.

From Barbara Negosh on July 25th, 2010
Judy, dear friend.,
I remember how we used to laugh and laugh together. You brought such happiness, good humor and joy to people. You were smart as a whip and I remember calling you the walking encyclopedia. I tried so hard to find you for so many years, to no avail. You are always in my heart.

From Lisamarie Blumberg on September 13th, 2010
Judie, I wish words could express how much I miss you, but they can't.  You were my bestfriend, my substitute Mom and the most wonderful role model on how to be a great Mom.  They say the pain dulls as time passes but I don't believe that is true, because I hurt as much writing this as I did when we received the phone call that you were gone.  I love you and miss you so very much.  Heaven received a precious gift when you entered.

Donald was a classmate and friend.  His life was cut short while in the service of his country in Viet  Nam .  Donald enjoyed our time at the "Annex."  Donald is one of  Lindenhurst's greatest heroes. God bless his soul.

From Daniel Schweit on March 17th, 2010
Don was one of my best friends through High School.  He was  very brilliant.  He had much to contribute to the world but lost his life to early in Viet Nam.

From Frank Samartino on April 20th, 2010
Image Donald and I grew up together in the 50's and 60's.  He was always a selfless person and a good friend.  Little did I realize that my friend would die a "Brother In Arms", an American hero who made the ultimate scarifice in Vietnam.  He is truly missed and I am proud to have known him as I did.  Donald rest well and know that your courage and service to our country will always be remembered.

From Linda Begega on October 14th, 2010
Donald was my stepbrother. His father married my mother shortly before he was sent to Viet Nam. He was very supportive of the marrage and for a while we three girls had a brother. Donald's dad died years ago as did my mom. We miss them both and Donald too. He was a good person.

From Allenda Testa on October 15th, 2010
I was adopted by Dominick Testa, Donald's father. While I was very young, I loved Donald from the minute I met him. He was kind and sweet. He had a softness about him that earned the trust of those around him. I remember him turning off his football game to let "his little sister" (me) watch Bugs Bunny. I was 5.  I hold all his medals as a tribute of the life he gave for his country.  I love my brother. I carry the family name with honor. He and Dad were both men of honor!

Tribute

From Linda Braswell-Castellan on July 3rd, 2010

I had the privilege of being Guidance Counselor for Linda's two beautiful and talented daughters during their years at Lindenhurst High School. It was not until then that I learned that Linda had become ill early during her Nursing career. She needed a liver transplant and, although she finally did undergo the surgery, the transplant was too late.
Linda was a wonderful mother- always concerned about the future and the welfare of her girls. It is unfortunate that her life was cut short. Her spirit, however, lives on in her children.

From Janet On Anderson on August 17th, 2010
Linda and I became friends when I started Edward W. Bower elementary school in 5th grade.  Even though we weren't in too many classes together, we were always friends.  She was a shy, quiet but sweet-natured girl.  Sorry to hear of her passing

From Polly (Berruti) Korman on April 25th, 2011

It is so heart-warming to see these kind words about my mother! She was such an inspirational woman and even though she was sick she was involved with so many activities with me and my sister Dawn. She was always proud to be a Bulldog.

Linda Castellan and Janet, thank you for sharing your memories of my mother. Linda, I remember how involved you were with my mother and all of the planning for me to go away to college.

From virginia (honey) huber (voelker) on May 3rd, 2012
